The core team members of Aksharaya comprise both teachers and industry professional, who have unparalleled experience and skill in Indian typography and calligraphy. They are supported by a strong working committee and a dedicated team of volunteers.

VINAY SAYNEKAR
Vinay Sanyekar has worked on various calligraphy and typography under the guidance and leadership of Prof. R. K. Joshi. He was associated with Chimanlal Pvt. Ltd. as their Chief Design Consultant, and has been teaching calligraphy and typography at Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art for twenty-six years. He has participated in a group show called ‘Three Calligraphers’, and has designed text type for corporate communication in Kannada, Bengali, Assamese and Devanagari. Vinay Sanyekar has also authored a book on calligraphy – Aksharsaumdarya - Nirmiti ani Itihas. He also conducts lectures and workshops to create awareness about calligraphy, especially for children.


SANTOSH KSHIRSAGAR
Born in 1967, Santosh Kshirsagar has received both his B. F. A and M. F. A (by research) from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art. He returned to his alma mater to teach and has been taking courses on Indian calligraphy (especially Devanagari), typography and visual communication design for the past twenty years. Amongst his most noted work are his typefaces in Gujrati and Oriya for Microsoft Windows XP; these were the first of their kind to be designed in the OTF format. He has spoken about Indian calligraphy in renowned institutions and conferences in Germany, Belgium, England and Japan, as well as conducted hundreds of workshops and has many publications to his name. His work has been exhibited in Australia and USA, and in Japan with Prof. Mori Kooun. Santosh Kshirsagar is currently pursuing his Ph. D. at the Industrial Design Center, Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.


SHUBHANND JOG
Shubhanand Jog studied at Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Arts, where he received his B. F. A. and M. F. A (by research). He has been a Teaching Faculty Member at the institute for the twenty years. He produced and directed ‘Angel of Peace’ – a short film on world peace, which was screened at Texas International Film Festival, World Social Forum (Mumbai) and Mumbai International Film Festival (in the competition section). Shubhanand Jog has designed and calligraphed R. K. Laxman’s ‘Citations – Manapatras’, as well as publications for Ajit Wadekar, Vinda Karandikar, Julio F. Rebero and Pt. Haro Prasad Chaurasia among others. He has conducted more than thirty workshops on calligraphy and has participated in a dozen creative seminars and workshops.


VIKRAM GAIKWAD
Vikram Gaikwad graduated from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art in 1990, and is currently Partner and Executive Creative Director at Creativeland Asia, which he founded with his partner in 2007. He has over twenty years of experience in advertising, and has won more than three hundred golds and silvers in national and international award shows including Cannes, Oneshow, D&AD and Clio. He was also ranked thirteen among India’s creative people by Campaign Brief Asia in 2003. While working closely with Prof. R. K. Joshi for more than a decade, Vikram was involved in many design and type design projects through the Industrial Design Center, Indian Institute of Technology. He has designed Tamil and Malayalam OTF typefaces for Microsoft Windows XP. He has been a judge at different advertising award shows – both local and international, in the last ten years. In 2007, Vikram was ranked among the Emerging Young Indians in a survey conducted by the Week magazine.


OMKAR SHENDE
Born in 1976, Omkar Shende completed his B. F. A from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Arts, with a specialization in typography. With more than twelve years of experience, he has worked on user experience design for several web, desktop and mobile devices.As a typeface designer, Omkar Shende has worked closely with Prof. R. K. Joshi, and designed fonts for both Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. In 2002, he was invited by Microsoft to attend a font design workshop in Seattle.


KURNAL RAWAT
Kurnal Rawat has been at the forefront of Indian design since 1998. After graduating from Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art, he founded ‘Grandmother India’, a multi-disciplinary design and communication studio. He has been invited to various design conferences around the world by international design bodies like Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Association), BNO (Association of Dutch Designers), Premesia (Platform for Dutch Design & Fashion) and FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). He has conducted workshops in Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands and India, and given lectures at Industrial Design Center, Mumbai; Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore; Senac, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and HKU-Utrecht, Netherlands. Kurnal is an active design researcher studying indigenous art and urban street culture through a typographic lens. His project ‘Typocity’ has been funded by Daniel Langolis Foundation, Canada, and has been featured in design magazines like Creative Review, Eye, Print, Art-India, Swindle and Arc. Typocity was part of an international design exhibitions, ‘Culture Catalyst’, Lisbon and ‘Visual Power Show’, Einthoven. He recently represented India in the Asia Design Meet in South Korea to discuss Asia being the new hub of design in the global arena.


SARANG KULKARNI
Sarang Kulkarni specializes in type design, calligraphy and typography. He is a graduate of Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Arts in 2002 and is the proprietor of WhiteCrow Design Management. WhiteCrow has handled various projects in Indian and Latin scripts, with a vast portfolio of graphic and identity design, as well as calligraphy, commissioned by both Indian and international clients. The studio has also designed all the typefaces for Vodafone and Virgin Mobile’s multi-lingual branding in India. Sarang has worked with Prof. R. K. Joshi and Prof. Santosh Kshirsagar, and has designed a Gurmukhi typeface for Microsoft Corporation for their operating system Windows XP.
